The End of Wartune Browser to Book

Many players paid a lot of attention to the Wartune Browser to Book campaign when they first found out that a Wartune novel was being written. Though the Wartune team may not have received as much funds as they had hoped for, they will continue with the novel as promised. Chioma Osifo, the novel’s author has double-down on her focus and they aims to have the novel finished by the second quarter of next year.

Proficient City did a fair amount to promote the Wartune team promote Browser to Book. They held a Fan Art Contest on Facebook, shared drawings made by some of Wartune’s most talented fans, and kept everyone up to date with the campaign’s progress on their official website and social media pages.

The Wartune team received a fair amount of fan art since the project started on November 28th, all made with passion and skill. Wartune fans are extremely talented, and dedicating their talents to this noble and innovative video game was a great boon for it. It seems these purveyors of their art were excited at the thought that their divine works could be published in the Wartune novel, given space with the noble words. Proficient City has yet to announce which of these prodigious pieces of art will be selected, but have plans to do so soon. Players, especially those who would like to know more about this impressive game’s history, are still invited to support Browser to Book directly or help share posts on Facebook and twitter.

This is the first time Wartune has held an alternate media project in its three years, and to celebrate the occasion they have prepared hordes of swag, including limited-edition postcards, unique dog tags, third-anniversary t-shirts and more. They put great effort into picking the materials and making each gift special, so make sure you get yours while you still can, especially the postcards.

The Browser to Book campaign ends December 27th, and the author is very busy. They’ve already selected some potential book covers, each with its own subtle mood. If you’d like to see them and voice your thoughts you can do so on the Wartune Facebook page.

Wartune: More than Just a Web Game

Asia-based Proficient City announced recently that it will publish a novel based on the popular web-game Wartune. The plan garnered a significant amount of attention on the games social media, with many players showing interest in the upcoming novel. Isaac Lee, Wartune’s head of operations, answered a few questions on the novel.

Q: Wartune has had a lot of success as a video game, but why have you decided to publish a novel?

A: We have always wanted to show players that Wartune is more than just a game. The developers have put a lot of effort into the story behind the game, but only a few of the more veteran players are familiar with it. There’s been a lot of interest from some players about being more involved with the game, lots of players submit their artwork, and a bunch wrote stories for an event we had to celebrate the 3rd anniversary. All of this effort was extremely touching, so we wanted to give back. Three years is a long time in this business, and it’s all thanks to the players.

Q: How did you choose the author?

A: There’s a lot of story that comes with Wartune, so we needed someone who could pick some of the best bits and make it into something cohesive, while still maintaining Wartune’s atmosphere. We also wanted someone who was open to working with us to write the novel, so that we could proceed with our vision as well.

Chioma Osifo is who we eventually found. She used to be a teacher and was inspired by the famous British best-selling writer David Gemmell. She has a lot of imagination and pitched some great ideas, so we’re excited to work with her.

Q: Why did you decide to use crowd-funding?

A: Wartune’s got a bit variety in players, and each of them loves Wartune in their own way. Some of them just want to play the game, while others devote time and money into Wartune, and want to more than just the game itself. And of course there’s a whole slew of players in between.  We decided to use crowd-funding because it gives players more choices on how to enjoy the novel. They can spend some money, or they can participate in some of the contests and still have the chance to win.

Q: This is your first time you doing crowd-funding, isn’t it? How has it been?

A: You’re right, this is our first time. We stole ideas from a bunch of our other projects, but it’s still been kind of crazy. The Indiegogo Strategists have been a great help. There’s a lot of game-related campaigns, so the big thing is trying to separate ourselves from the crowd. We’ve also talked to a few people who ran some successful campaigns, and they’ve been helpful. Guy Windsor, who running his own campaign, ‘Guy’s NEW, ADVANCED, Longsword Book!’ was super helpful with the campaign page. Thanks to all these people the campaign is running a lot smoother than it might have.

The following is a possible cover for Wartune novel

Q: It seems as if some players are concerned that the novel means less time is being spent on the game, what are your thoughts on this?

A: They shouldn’t be worried. We always put the game before everything else, we won’t let the novel get in the way. We have different people working on game improvements and the campaign, and we’ve been trucking along with both. The newest version of Wartune launched on Dec. 8th, and added quite a few new features. We’re constantly optimizing and improving, and 3 years of gaming shows the players appreciate it.

Wartune – Browser to Book Top Perks All Gone

Wartune began its Browser to Book Indiegogo campaign at 20:00 EST on Nov. 26th. The campaign had a bit of a rocky start, but backers had scooped up the three most expensive perks by the fourth day. This perk, priced at $1000, included some in-game rewards and other trinkets, but also gives the backer the chance to write an acknowledgement at the back of the book. The team running the campaign has stated that they won’t be increasing the amount of rewards, so it looks like there won’t be any more acknowledgements.

The team received some concern from their fans about their choice of author, but is standing by the relatively unknown Chioma Osifo. “There’s a magic to her writing,” says Xitou Lee, Proficient City’s COO, “She draws you in.” Chioma has written two previous books – Regrets, and A Circle.

According to Wartune staff this has been one of their most successful events, reaching almost seven times their normal amount of likes, shares, and comments. They credit a large amount of the success to the Novel Art contest, where they gave players the chance to have their art featured in the book.

When Rachel Tang, the team’s social media manager, was asked about the contest she responded: “We don’t care the art is good or not, we just want to see what players can do! We want to see what Wartune looks like through their eyes.”

Art submitted for the Novel Art Contest

The novel itself will explore Wartune’s history, giving context to a game that has previously emphasized gameplay. It is expected to be completed by June of 2016, and will initially only be released to Indiegogo backers, though Ms. Tang stats they have plans to share it with other players in the future.

The Novel Indiegogo campaign is scheduled to continue until December 28th. Check it out at,

Wartune Fans Share Their Art

Art is one of the few things that truly seperates people from the rest of the natural world. Video games are an extension of that separation, a medium that allows the artist and the viewer to interact in a tangible way. To celebrate the value of art in videogames, and to celebrate their upcoming novel, your favorite browser RPG Wartune is holding an art contest.

Last week Proficient City staff began receiving fan art, with willing artists hoping to have their art featured in the upcoming novel. The Proficient City staff were delighted by the enthusiastic response on Facebook, and are excited to help upcoming artists show their work. The event isn’t over yet, though and they’re hoping for more contributions. They want to know how Wartune makes you feel, what you find most interesting. You can draw or paint or collage on photograph anything to do with Wartune: your favorite character or weapon, or your most hated boss, as long as it’s original art.

Art is an interaction. It’s an interaction between people, between ideas, between the artist and the medium. And interactions are what’s important, right? Art is another way to show how you feel those around you, which you love and play with. It’s another way to make connections in the real world.

You have the chance to make this connection with the thousands of people who will read the novel, but you’ll get more than that. Not only are they giving away in-game currency to some of the many artists, but they’re also giving away some limited-edition Wartune postcards. The postcards only get a single run, and if you and some friends manage to get the full set of six, you’ll see a special message from a mysterious sender. The postcards have been made with love, joy, resolution and Proficient City staff’s best wishes for your dedication these past 3 years.

If you want to receive one of these special postcards then stay updated on the Wartune novel and get drawing!
